Battle of the Axe continues to produce, nourish and establish the careers of the very best performers on the Irish Open Mic Comedy & Singer/songwriter circuit. Established in 1996 the Battle of the Axe presents an eclectic mix of new and established talent.

Stand-up comedy, singer/ songwriters & open mic are premier features of the Battle of the Axe show on Tuesday nights while Thursday night features some of the best Stand-up Comedy, improv and sketch performances to be seen in Dublin city. The gig is one of Ireland’s longest established clubs and continues to feature impromptu guest performances from established luminaries from the International and Irish Comedy Circuit. If your idea of a good night out is to experience the perfect pint in a quintessentially intimate Dublin pub while being entertained by some of the best new and established talent the Nation has to offer drop in to Battle of the Axe at The Ha’Penny Bridge Inn on Tuesday or Thursday nights!

The Battle of the Axe roots itself in The Hoop Bar, Notting Hill Gate, London where Producer/Director and Founder Tony Ferns organised open mic shows for musicians in the early 1980s for 10 years.

Tony established the Battle of the Axe a few years after his return to Ireland in 1996 primarily for actors trying out monologues.

However soon Comedians and Singer/songwriters fell in love with the open mic theme of the Lucky Duck Award and Certificate with audience voting for the No 1 act on the night. And that was it  – The Battle of the Axe was fully born.

In the same year he won the new act competitions ‘Show Me The Funny’ and ‘The All-Ireland College And University Inter-varsity’ competition. This put him in front of promoters and the comedy industry of Ireland and led to him supporting Kevin Bridges at the Galway Comedy Festival and received glowing reviews.

In March 2016 Colum started a weekly podcast called ‘Lowlife Diaries’, it is available on iTunes and Soundcloud. This year he is bringing his debut hour show, ‘The Hookers & Blow Show’ to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2016.”

Gary has performed across the globe at some of the biggest Comedy Clubs in the UK, Ireland, North America, Australia and Mainland Europe including Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City, Yuk Yuks in Toronto and the Comedy Lounge in Perth, Australia.

He has performed 3 Edinburgh Fringe Shows in 2011,2014 and 2015 and performed his debut solo show The Bald and the Bold at Adelaide Fringe in 2014 where he was called “Amusing and Satisfying” by Krystoff Raw.

He annually hosts Scotfest in Tulsa, Olkahoma one of the biggest festivals celebrating Scottish Culture in North America – the festival attracts over 30,000 people across the weekend.
